Why Should You Visit Puerto Montt?

Puerto Montt is the administrative and commercial capital of the Lakes District in Patagonia. This port city boasts a unique combination of Germanic and Chilean cultures and a central location within the region, making it a must-see community for travelers. It is a bustling community that offers all the commodities and comforts that you would expect in a regional hub, including diverse shopping opportunities, first-run movie theatres, and massive grocery stores. It is also home to the unique port area called Angelmo.

Angelmo Port District

Many people come Puerto Montt after extended stays in the smaller Germanic towns of the Lake District. Approaching the city by water, it is apparent that you have again reached civilization. Once on land, you are greeted by the charm of the Angelmo port district. Here, you can find restaurants and fish markets that offer fresh salmon, oysters, clams, mussels, and king crab. Take a moment to taste the local fruits, vegetables, and cheeses from the stands that are found in this district as well. In Angelmo, you can also browse through dozens of craft shops offering a sampling of Chilean culture.

Hub for Adventure

Puerto Montt is the launching pad for trips throughout the region. Tourists come here to take ferries throughout the Lake District and even into Argentina. If you are planning a trip to Bariloche, Argentina from Puerto Montt, check out the Petrohué Waterfalls on the way. Less than a day away by bus is the majestic Orosono Volcano. This natural wonder measures in at over 2,500 meters. The slopes are covered with snow year-round, and guided tours are given if you want to climb the side of an active volcano. The El Tupual airport in Puerto Montt offers easy access to and from the region with a two-hour flight to Santiago as well flights to Punta Arenas, Balmaceda, Concepcion Temuco, and Bariloche, Argentina.

Puerto Montt is a hub city in the truest sense of the word. It offers services and a culture all its own, but it also acts as gateway to a variety of natural wonders that this part of Chile has to offer.
